1. Using lemon on your teeth
This acid damages the enamel when used continuously and excessively. The acidity of the lemon progressively damages the enamel and discolors it, making the tooth more exposed to possible cavities and fractures.
When we have drinks with a lot of lemon juice, it is recommended to drink them with a straw (metal or bamboo) so they are not in direct contact with the teeth.
2. Using activated charcoal to brush our teeth.
Although it does remove stains, activated charcoal is very abrasive and there are not as many studies that prove its effectiveness. If you decide to use it, it is best to do it once every 15 days or once a month.

3. Using whitening kits sold online.
There are many that contain chemicals that may cause tooth sensitivity, gum irritation and enamel erosion. These treatments should always be supervised by a dentist. For example, baking soda is one of the most widely used teeth whitening DIY. However, we must know that this product is highly corrosive and abrasive, and therefore if we use it directly on our teeth we will be damaging them. Also, these remedies have a false whitening effect that will disappear after a few days.
4. Daily use of whitening toothpastes.
The toothpastes that promise to whiten our teeth have a very small proportion of teeth-whitening active ingredients. However, as they are abrasive pastes, they can remove external stains and give the impression that the teeth become whiter, but in reality they wear down the tooth enamel.
5. Thinking that teeth whitening destroys the tooth enamel.
Many people who do not dare to take the step of teeth whitening due to fear of damaging their teeth. Whitening that is not controlled by experts and following the proper guidelines can cause teeth to weaken and gradually wear away. However, professional treatment does not have to damage the enamel or cause it to become more sensitive.
Also remember that while you are undergoing a teeth whitening procedure it is recomended to avoid excessive consumption of beverages or foods such as coffee or tea and the use of tobacco. Otherwise, the effectiveness and durability of the whitening treatment will be reduced.
Can anyone have teeth whitening done?
Whitening is not recommended for children under 15 years of age who have not yet formed enamel, pregnant women, patients with periodontal disease or who have undergone many restorations, patients allergic to the whitening formula or patients suffering from gingival retraction.
Remember that the dentist, after studying the case of each patient, is who should recommend this treatment or not.
